Driver banned after he crashed twice in chase
TEENAGER DROVE STOLEN BMW WITH DEFLATED TYRE BEFORE SMASHING INTO WALL
A 17-YEAR old who led the police on an ‘erratic’ chase before crashing twice has been banned from the roads.
Huzaifah Hameed, now 19, was driving the stolen BMW convertible when he was spotted by police officers in an unmarked car.
As they followed him they dispersed a stinger to slow him down, but he carried on despite hitting it with his rear tyre, Manchester Crown Court heard.
Despite being one tyre down, Hameed, of Crumpsall, continued on driving at speeds of 60mph before going through a couple of sets of red traffic lights.
At 65mph he went through another set of red lights but the tyre was deflating rapidly and he struggled to keep in control of the car.
As the tyre completely deflated, he lost control of the car and went up onto two wheels along the footpath on Harpurhey Road before driving back down and continuing on.
Hameed pushed the already-slowing car on before he lost control again and smashed into a wall. He tried to jump out and make a run for it but he was detained by assisting officers. Hameed pleaded guilty to one offence of dangerous driving.
He was sentenced to an 18-month community order, eight days of rehabilitation activity requirements and 90 hours unpaid work. Hameed was said to have no previous convictions. Mitigating, his defence lawyer Dan Gaskell said: “He runs a recovery business for buying and selling vehicles. There is no option but to disqualify him which will have an effect on his business. He is remorseful of his actions.” Sentencing him, Judge Michael Leeming said: “Not only did you put your passengers at risk, you also put pedestrians and the police at risk too.”
Hameed, of Moss Bank, was banned from driving for 12 months and must take an extended retest.
