Tributes paid after death of ‘amazing’ heart doctor

TRIBUTES have poured in after the death of a cardiologi­st at Wythenshaw­e Hospital.

Dr Neil Davidson has been described as an “amazing” doctor and “true gentleman,” by those who knew and worked with him.

He had worked at the south Manchester hospital in the cardiology department since 2002, and provided life-saving treatment to hundreds of patients.

Dr Davidson leaves behind his wife Sue, and three daughters, whom he lived with in Lymm, Cheshire.

Originally from Edinburgh, Dr Davidson studied medicine at the University of Newcastle-uponTyne, where he was inspired to become a cardiologi­st.

After graduating he worked as a junior doctor in Nottingham, before spending two years as a British Heart Foundation fellow at the University of Dundee.

He then returned to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle to complete specialist training in cardiology, before working in cardiac electrophy­siology in Australia, at Westmead Hospital, Sydney and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Since 2002, Dr Davidson had worked as a consultant cardiologi­st at Wythenshaw­e Hospital.

Announcing Dr Davidson’s death on Twitter, the Heart Centre at Wythenshaw­e Hospital paid tribute to an “amazing person.”

They wrote: “Extremely sad news. Dr Neil Davidson - our friend, colleague, mentor and teacher - has died.

“He was an amazing person and will be missed greatly by all of us. Please keep his family in your thoughts.”

The post prompted an outpouring of tributes from those who had worked with the doctor, or been treated by him.

One colleague wrote: “Extremely shocking and sad news. Neil was one of the best cardiologi­sts I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to his family.”

A patient said: “Such sad news. I am forever grateful for all he did for me as a patient. One of the nicest doctors I have ever met

“Thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

Another wrote: “Such devastatin­g news for all who knew him. I will never forget his kindness and understand­ing during a very difficult time in my life. Thoughts go out to his family and friends.

A cardiology nurse, said: “I loved knowing it was Dr Davidson’s week on call, working with him as a Nurse was an absolute pleasure.

“He was gentle, caring and his bedside manner was second to none. His knowledge was extraordin­ary and he was always keen to share it.

“I am devastated. ACCU will miss you.”

Consultant cardiologi­st, Niall Campbell said: “Such terrible news. So many wonderful memories of Neil’s compassion, thoughtful­ness, diplomacy and wisdom.

“I hope his wife and daughters draw some comfort from how much Neil was liked and admired by all who knew him. I will really miss him.”
