Attention should turn to nuclear arms race immorality
LAST week a letter of mine appealing for journalistic responsibility and politeness in addressing others’ opinions appeared under the title “Don’t go changing narrative on climate” (Viewpoints, July 30).
I wrote in particularly with reference to a squabble between Marc Hudson of Climate Emergency Manchester and one John Douglas, but my points apply to all discussion on topics that matter.
It seems both parties are unlikely to be swayed by their correspondence, perhaps they both have reasons for that other than those they share, people often have.
However on the assumption that they are sincere and wouldn’t want to hoodwink readers, though they might want to educate and persuade them with truths, could I suggest they put the correspondence to bed.
Of course when events change we may hope for responsible coverage with contributions from authorities who can explain their credentials, not unbalanced selective assertion throwing cod facts and dust in people’s eyes.
There are lots of other long-term issues demanding our attention such as the immorality of foot dragging in the nuclear arms race that Steve Roman drew attention to on Saturday. I’m not as clearly a CND supporter as he, but vileness of routinely doling billions to the coffers of arms corporations when many millions of children are hungry should make us at least pause for thought. Would anyone like to refute that?
