Super Kev named best in Prem

- By JOE BRAY

KEVIN de Bruyne has been voted as the best player in the 2019/20 Premier League season.

The City midfielder enjoyed arguably his best campaign yet at the Etihad, scoring a personal best of 13 league goals, and equalling the record for 20 assists in a season.

De Bruyne claimed his 20th assist on the final day to move level with former Arsenal hero Thierry Henry in registering the most amount of assists in a single season.

The Belgian even had two assists controversially taken off him in both fixtures with Arsenal, with him claiming the record outright in interviews.

Whether he shares the record with Henry or not, De Bruyne won the Playmaker of the Year award for his efforts this season as City finished second in the table.

Two of his goals were also nominated for Goal of the Season – his thunderbolt half-volley at Newcastle, and his final day curled effort against Norwich. That award was rightly won by Heung-Min Son’s incredible solo effort for Spurs against Burnley.

De Bruyne, who won City’s Player of the Year vote and is favourite to be named PFA Player of the Year, beat competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Danny Ings, Sadio Mane, Nick Pope and Jamie Vardy.

Incredibly, De Bruyne is only the second City player to win this Premier League award, with Vincent Kompany winning the accolade in 2011/12. Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk won the award in the last two years when City were crowned Premier League champions.
