Armed police swoop after ‘weapons attack’

- By NEAL KEELING AND REBECCA DAY

ARMED cops arrested suspects at gunpoint.

Three men were removed from a silver BMW in Dixon Street, Newton Heath. In a planned strike by GMP, the suspects were taken from the car and forced to lie on the ground handcuffed.

A silver BMW was later removed from the scene by police on a trailer.

All three men were held on suspicion of serious assault after a man was attacked with weapons hours earlier.

A woman, who asked not to be named, said: “We were in bed asleep, we just heard lots of shouting. It’s scary, you don’t really see anything happen like that here.”

Another woman said she looked out of the window when she saw the three lights from police cars outside. She said: “It was three Asian or Romanian men, the police had a gun at the window. They were whacking the window with the gun. Police held a gun to the window, they had Tasers. They got (the arrested people) out, sat them down outside the car.

“All I heard (police) say was that they were arrested under section 18. I saw two undercover police cars and a big X5.”

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “At around 7.30pm on Monday, 17 August 2020, police were called to a report of an assault on Belvoir Avenue, Manchester.

“Officers attended and enquiries have since established that a man, in his 30s, had been attacked by four males with weapons, before the offenders fled the scene in a silver BMW. The victim was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. At around 10pm, police were made aware that the vehicle had been sighted in the Newton Heath area.

“A short time later, the vehicle was located on Dixon Street and three men were arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault. They remain in police custody for questioning. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

Anyone with information can call police, quoting incident 2761 of 17/08/20.
