WEEKEND OF SHAME
POLICE CHIEF VOWS ACTION AFTER SERIES OF ATTACKS ON HIS OFFICERS:
A POLICE chief has vowed thugs will face the ‘full weight of the law’ after a weekend of attacks on his officers.
A woman sunk her teeth into an officer’s arm - before another kicked out at cops - during a shameful episode in Piccadilly Gardens.
In another incident in Stockport, a man bit an officer - and tried to strangle a second.
The incidents came before police were pelted with missiles as they attempted to break up an illegal lockdown party in Bolton. A man was Tasered as four people were arrested.
GMP said that at around 5.30pm on Saturday, a member of the public told an officer two women were behaving ‘aggressively’ in Piccadilly Gardens.
A female police officer intervened and attempted to diffuse the situation.
When she tried to separate them, one of the women bit her on the arm. The officer needed hospital treatment.
When the woman was being arrested, another woman kicked out at officers and tried to prevent her being apprehended.
The two women, both aged 40, were arrested on suspicion of assault of an emergency services worker and remain in custody for questioning.
At about 9.45pm on Saturday, police went to a house on Reddish Vale Road in Stockport after receiving reports that a man was trying to break in. As he tried to resist arrest, he bit one officer and tried to strangle another.
The 27-year-old man was Tasered and taken to hospital as a precaution, before being arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault on an emergency worker. Neither officer needed hospital treatment.
At about 10pm police went to a house in Farnworth, Bolton, where 50 people turned up to a party in breach of lockdown rules.
Nick Bailey, Assistant Chief Constable for Greater Manchester Police, said: “It is saddening to have to reflect upon another weekend where our hardworking officers have been assaulted during the course of their duties.
“These attacks are completely unacceptable and I want to make it clear that we will work to ensure that those responsible feel the full weight of the law.
“I’m sure every right-thinking member of our communities will join me in condemning these assaults.”
