Southgate backs Dean to fight right to the Hend
ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate has backed Dean Henderson’s decision to stay and fight David de Gea for the number one shirt at United.
The 23-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United but looks set to remain at Old Trafford this summer after signing a new fiveyear contract.
Henderson is keen to establish himself as United and England number one after an impressive debut season in the Premier League last term.
The sketchy form of Jordan Pickford and De Gea has offered him further confidence he can uproot the Spaniard and the Everton man to take the gloves for England as well.
Whilst some believe Henderson should head back out on loan to ensure his development isn’t stunted, Southgate has backed him to push De Gea for a starting berth, having named the goalkeeper in his England squad for their upcoming Nations League matches.
“I think it’s an opportunity for him really, “Southgate said.
“Of course, he could take another season out and gain another year of Premier League experience but at his age as a goalkeeper, you can’t just think about the international situation.
“You are building a career and here’s an opportunity to challenge for the shirt at Manchester United if they are asking him to stay in the building.
“If I was him and I had the chance to push to be the Manchester United number one, then I’d make the same decision he has. He’s got the chance to train every day in front of the manager, to influence him and put David de Gea under pressure for his place.”
