Mum’s horror as boy knocked off bike where his brother died
NINE-YEAR-OLD RUN OVER ON WAY HOME FROM SHRINE TO TRAGIC SIBLING
A MUM is appealing for help after her nine-year-old was knocked off his bike and injured on the same road where her other son died in a car crash.
Claire Taylor’s son Rudi Till suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs and head injuries after a collision with a black Seat Leon on Manchester Road in Castleton, Rochdale.
It happened as Rudi was on his way back from visiting a shrine at the site where his older brother Kavana Taylor, 21, was killed in a horrific smash in 2018.
Claire says that a friend of Rudi’s, who came to help him, told her the driver got out of the car and was verbally abusive to Rudi, before leaving the scene.
Rudi was taken to hospital by ambulance, and is now recovering at home.
Claire says that Rudi being injured, particularly so close to the place where his older brother died, has set her back in her grief.
Kavana died in the early hours of Easter Sunday 2018 after the BMW 3 Series he was driving crashed into a Volkswagen Polo.
An inquest into his death later heard he was three-and-ahalfthe drink drive limit and had traces of cocaine in his system.
In the days following his death, family and friends created a shrine to Kavana close to the spot where he died, which Rudi went to visit last week.
Claire added that the nine-year-old is struggling with what happened and is appealing for anyone who saw the incident to go to the police with information.
Claire said: “He’s autistic, so the emotional side of it is harder to deal with than the physical side of it.
“He couldn’t get his head around it, it’s heartbreaking. His friend saw what happened and had gone to help him.
She asked the driver to call an ambulance but he said no.
“The guy called Rudi some not very nice names and he’s just left the scene. “I can’t believe this happened on the same road, even on the same side.”
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.20pm on Monday 21 September 2020, police were called to Manchester Road,
Castleton to reports of a fail-to-stop collision. Emergency services attended and enquiries established that a grey Seat Leon had been involved in collision with a child on a bike. The car failed to stop at the scene.
“The child was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
“No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing.”
