Thug nearly runs grandad over - then breaks his jaw

PENSIONER RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL AFTER ‘MINDLESS’ ATTACK

- By ZARA WHELAN

A GRANDAD was left in hospital following a ‘mindless’ attack after he ‘had words’ with a man who ‘nearly knocked him over’ in his car.

Dennis Crowe, 72, was left with a broken jaw after being punched twice in Salford.

He was left lying on the pavement in agony following the incident.

An ambulance was called after a passer-by rushed to help Mr Crowe.

He is in hospital in a stable condition awaiting surgery. He has been left unable to speak properly.

Mr Crowe’s loved ones are appealing for anyone with information speak to police.

Speaking about the ‘mindless’ attack, son Mark said: “He went to Eccles to put some electric on his meter then stopped in the pub on the way home.

“He was walking back along Chatsworth Road in Ellesmere Park - it was only about 6pm. He was crossing the road when he said some young lad in an Astra came speeding around the corner and nearly hit him.

“He said he and the lad had words... my dad told him he’d nearly ran him

over. The lad gave him some abuse out of the window so my dad gave him the Vs and the lad drove off.

“Then he’s come around the corner and the lad’s there waiting for him in his car. He’s got out of his car, walked over to my dad and punched him twice, breaking his jaw, twice. He’s then left him on the floor and driven off.”

Mark said his dad is well-known in Eccles, having lived there for over 40 years. “Everyone is shocked,” he added. “It’s a disgusting crime and I don’t know what went through his head to break an old man’s jaw.”

Mark said doctors told Mr Crowe he’ll be in hospital for another three or four days. He can’t have visitors because of the Covid pandemic.

“He’s now got to stay in there on his own,” Mark added.

“We don’t know when we can next see him.”

In a statement, a GMP spokesman said: “Police were called at around 12.55pm on Saturday 26 September, 2020, to reports of an assault on Portland Road in the Eccles area of Salford.

“It is believed that at on the evening of Friday 25 September, a man in his 70s was punched twice in the face by a man who got into his car and made off.

“The victim suffered a broken jaw and was taken to hospital.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
