Rodri: We have to learn from defeat quickly

- By SIMON BAJKOWSKI

RODRI hopes City can quickly learn the lessons of last season before they drop any more Premier League points.

Pep Guardiola and his team are trying not to panic after a 5-2 thumping at home to Leicester, with the manager’s message to his players after the game being to remind them how good they are.

However, the Blues will have to be aware they cannot afford too many more repeats of Sunday given the champions of the last three years have dropped just 14, 16 and 15 points respectively over the entire campaign.

The demands of this season after such a short rest over summer may lower expectations for all teams, but all the same City cannot learn to accept defeats.

Spanish midfielder Rodri put the Leicester defeat down to bad luck - perhaps an acceptable explanation of one game but not when it follows the same trends of last season - but said the players know what needs to come next.

“I think we did a good performance for the first 25-30 minutes but it is a difficult game to read what happened. We conceded, we made mistakes - but they didn’t propose anything,” he said. “They just defend, come here 11 players behind, in the box. We did the hardest thing, we scored the first goal but when we concede the penalties, the match is over because it is so difficult.

“We prepared for the game so hard. We do everything to win. For very small and tiny details we lost.

“But it is the beginning. It happens. I think this match can happen just one of 100, but it’s happened. We have not been very lucky. That’s the truth.

“Always to be champions you need to be a bit lucky. We have to improve and learn what we do.

“The good thing about this is we have to take a look at last season and we can learn about that. It is easy to come back. We are in the beginning of the season. Nothing happened, no-one dies. We know we have to win every single game to win this Premier League, but let’s see the rest of the teams are so hard to win every single game. We have to keep focusing.”
