All 10 boroughs on virus red alert
THE number of daily coronavirus infections is continuing to spike across most parts of Greater Manchester.
Every one of the region’s 10 boroughs is now on the government’s ‘red alert,’ meaning they have an infection rate of more than 50 cases per 100,000 people. But a select few local areas across the conurbation do appear to be going against the trend, with a small number of cases.
Testing data from Public Health England shows that in the week to Thursday 24 September, nine hyper local areas in Greater Manchester have had between zero and two cases in the last seven days.
The data is available in PHE’s rolling Covid Map, which details where localised outbreaks are across the region.
In the last week, the worst hit areas have been the wards of Hulme and University, and University North and Whitworth Street in central Manchester, where 56 and 59 new cases were recorded respectively. This is most likely linked to an outbreak over cases at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Birley and Cambridge Halls of Residence.
Fallowfield Central and Longsight have also recorded over 50 cases in the week to September 24.
In Oldham, the wards of Werneth and Alexandra Park appear to be the borough’s hotspots, with 49 and 69 new cases respectively. Bolton has also recorded spikes over the last week in Rumworth North, where there were 41 new cases, and Springfield and Great Lever, where there were 44.
The ward of Wardleworth and Newbold Brow in Rochdale nearly reached 50 new infections in the week to September 24.
But there have been some exemptions from the current spiking trend seen across most of Greater Manchester. A small number of hyperlocal areas in the conurbation appear to be resisting, with cases showing below three.
