Harry: We could have buried ‘em

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

OLDHAM head coach Harry Kewell praised his side’s versatility following their 2-1 win at Cambridge United.

Two second-half goals in the space of three minutes from Conor McAleny and Alfie McCalmont helped Latics to a sixth straight away victory at the Abbey Stadium before Paul Mullin pulled one back for the hosts late on.

“I think it was a very good performance,” said Kewell. “Cambridge are a fantastic team, they’ve had a fantastic start to the season.

“We changed certain things, I want to create a team that can adapt and I saw a team compete, create chances, score goals - a fantastic effort and I can’t be more pleased.”

The first half saw limited chances for either side before the hosts were awarded a penalty when Harry Clarke fouled Harvey Knibbs just before the break, but U’s forward Mullin saw his spot-kick saved by Ian Lawlor.

Oldham took control in the second half and went ahead on 57 minutes, as McAleny reacted first to the deflection from McCalmont’s blocked effort and fired a volley into the far corner.

McCalmont then grabbed a goal of his own to double his side’s lead shortly after with a low shot following Sido Jombati’s knockdown inside the area.

The hosts then pulled a goal back in added time as Mullin turned well in the box and sent his shot into the top left corner.

“They had spells of minutes but we could have buried that team,” Kewell added.

“We knew what they were capable of but we adapted and stuck to the game plan for 95 minutes and that’s the reason why we won.”
