AROUND 400 new homes, including affordable housing inside a historic landmark, are proposed as part of the continued transformation of Ancoats and New Islington.
A ‘mobility hub’ with shared car and cycle parking, as well as new commercial and green spaces, also form part of proposals by Manchester council and housing providers. Residents can now have their say on six potential future developments during a public consultation which will run until January 11, 2021.
The projects represent the latest phase of residential development in Ancoats and New Islington by Manchester Life, the £1bn joint venture formed by the city council and Manchester City owners the Abu Dhabi United Group, and housing provider Great Places. emerging developments across Ancoats.
Electric vehicle charging points will also be provided alongside a ‘car club’ to encourage flexible car sharing and rentals over car ownership. But with the council wanting to encourage cycling as a primary mode of transport, a ‘cycle hub’ is proposed with bike storage facilities. The hub would also house a logistics area that would centralise parcel deliveries including smart parcel lockers. It would take the place of the Poland Street Industrial Estate.
An eight-storey apartment building with 120 flats is proposed on land at the corner of Jersey Street and Poland Street which is currently used as a car park. Manchester Life is aiming to provide a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom market homes with a private central yard. Shops and workspaces would occupy the ground floor of the building.
