Dortmund boss sacked as Reds keep an eye on Sancho latest

-

UNCERTAINTY at Borussia Dortmund could prove beneficial in United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

Dortmund have parted ways with manager Lucien Favre following Saturday’s disastrous 5-1 home defeat by VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

Favre had been at the German giants since May 2018 and led them to consecutive second-place finishes in the Bundesliga.

However, defeat by Stuttgart was their fourth in 11 league games this season and left them in fifth place, five points adrift of defending champions Bayern Munich.

Dortmund have now won just one of their past five games and the club hierarchy decided they had seen enough, dismissing the 63-year-old.

“We are all grateful for Lucien Favre and his excellent work over the past two and a half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice,” said Dortmund chief executive HansJoachim Watzke. “Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person.”

The sacking has left assistant manager Edin Terzic in charge of Dortmund, who now face a crunch game on Tuesday against Werder Bremen.

Dortmund’s struggles could play into the hands of United, whose pursuit of Sancho is no secret.

United have been chasing the England winger for some time, but nothing came of their interest after chief executive Ed Woodward baulked at Dortmund’s £108m valuation in the summer.

New boss Terzic will try to stabilise his playing squad, who are at least into the knockout stages of the Champions League after topping Group F.

However, their poor form could see Sancho looking for the exit once again and Terzic himself has previously admitted that the heavy speculation around the 20-year-old affected his concentration.
