Slow start cost Latics a point

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

HARRY Kewell says a slow start what was cost Oldham a point in their 3-2 defeat to Walsall at Boundary Park.

A second-half strike from Elijah Adebayo secured victory for the visitors after goals from Josh Gordon, Dylan Fage and one in each net from Carl Piergianni had the two side’s level.

“We probably didn’t have the greatest start,” said the Latics boss at full-time. We had an idea of what we wanted to do, we just weren’t executing it correctly.”

Oldham found themselves a goal behind on 23 minutes when referee James Ball pointed to the penalty spot following Fage’s foul on Wes McDonald. Gordon then converted by slotting the ball into the corner.

Walsall then doubled their lead shortly after the break, as Cameron Norman put a dangerous cross into the area and Piergianni turned the ball into his own net.

Fage pulled a goal back for his side moments later, latching onto Dylan Bahamboula’s mazing run and slotting past goalkeeper Jack

Rose. And they were level on 68 minutes when Piergianni made amends for his earlier error. Connecting with a free-kick, the Latics captain sent a diving header into the bottom corner.

But the visitors were ahead again five minutes later, this time through Adebayo who flicked his shot past Ian Lawlor to put his side back in front.

“We knew that they were going to press and we just weren’t quick enough on that and we ended up just putting more pressure on ourselves,” Kewell added.
