Roo the day: Phelan takes aim at Wazza

- By PAUL CLARKE @MENSports

UNITED assistant manager Mike Phelan has sent a message to Kai Rooney upon his signing for the Reds.

Kai is the son of United great Wayne Rooney, who starred for the club from 2004 to 2017.

Rooney’s son may only be 11 years of age but he is already on the books at United after signing this week, with the former England international sharing a picture on Twitter of himself with Kai and his wife Coleen at Old Trafford.

“Proud day. Kai signing for @ ManUtd. Keep up the hard work son,” Rooney posted on Twitter.

The 35-year-old Rooney, now the interim manager at Derby County in the Championship, is well versed with Phelan from his days at United, with the latter having served under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2008 until the legendary manager’s retirement.

So naturally, Phelan chimed in with a cheeky response to Kai’s signing by lightly mocking his father on Twitter.

Phelan posted: “Not sure I can handle another. Keep grafting young one and listen to your Dad.”

Coleen Rooney also reacted to the news and wrote on Instagram: “Special night. Congratulations Kai. I love you and I am so proud of you. Keep trying your best.”

While Kai is planning for a big future in football, his father has all-but hung up his boots and has explained he will retire if offered the permanent Derby managerial job.

“If I manage the team longterm I do not feel it is possible to manage and play. If I’m not managing the team I will continue to play, but if I’m asked to manage the team on a full-time basis that will be the end of my playing days.”
