A CHEMICAL blast at an industrial site left a 40-year-old man in hospital with serious burns to his face and hands.

Fire crews, paramedics and police rushed to the CSG compound off Liverpool Road, Cadishead, Salford, at around 11.15am yesterday.

Residents described hearing a ‘big blast’ from the site and seeing green and yellow smoke rising into the air following the incident.

Specialist firefighters from a hazardous materials unit were called in to help and an area to the north east of the site was taped off.

The injured man was immediately rushed to hospital by paramedics and was in a serious condition with chemical burns, a spokesman for GMP said.

In a statement, a spokesman for the fire service added: “Firefighters have rapidly established a cordon and made safe all other structures and hazardous materials on the site and a Hazardous Materials Officer is making an assessment of the scene.

“Greater Manchester Police are at the incident and the Health and Safety Executive have been notified.” Police confirmed that an investigation into the incident was under way. A nearby resident who heard the explosion just after 11am described it as a big blast which was quickly followed by the sound of sirens as emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Another witness, who was working on a roof on Liverpool Road at the time of the explosion, said he saw coloured smoke coming from the compound. “It would have been around 11am,” he said. “It was a big loud bang and then we saw this green and yellow smoke coming from there.”

CSG Cadishead is a large waste management facility. The M.E.N. approached CSG for comment but has not received a response.
