Centurions boost squad with signing of former Warriors duo

- By TOM BRAMWELL

LEIGH have handed full-time contracts to Iain Thornley and Tom Spencer ahead of their return to the Betfred Super League.

The pair, who both progressed through the Wigan Warriors Academy system, had been combining their roles with the Centurions with careers outside of rugby league.

But they have each agreed to go full-time with the club in 2021 - to the delight of coach John Duffy.

“Iain and Tom are two players who have been fantastic for me and I am really pleased they are going full-time,” said the former Swinton Lions boss.

“It speaks volumes about them that they are willing to take this opportunity and give their all for the Leigh Centurions in 2021.

“I am very pleased they have both been able to secure fulltime deals because they are two players who have been on the same journey as me since I came to the club.”

Thornley won a Grand Final and Challenge Cup final during his time with the Warriors and also featured in Super League for Hull KR and Catalans Dragons before arriving at Leigh Sports Village.

He was one of the club’s stand-out performers in 2019, winning a number of accolades at the club’s end of season awards.

Spencer has made more than 100 appearances for the Centurions and is in his second permanent stint with the club, having rejoined from London Broncos. He made his first appearance for the club while on dual-registration from Wigan back in 2012.

The Warriors have, meanwhile, confirmed that Josh Woods and one-time Salford Red Devils loanee Jake Shorrocks have been released from their contracts to join Newcastle Thunder.
