Yobs wreck woodland’s ‘fairy trail’

VANDALS have destroyed a ‘fairy trail’ for children in woodland.

The yobs have ripped off decorative ‘fairy doors’, signs and boxes from trees in Carr Wood in Bramhall, Stockport.

The idea for the children’s trail came from Jo Hoddes, who installed a set of fairy doors in the woods last year. She hoped the gesture would help to make youngsters smile and encourage them to get out in the fresh air.

The resident-run volunteer group Friends of Carr Wood embraced her idea, hand crafting a wooden ‘hedgehog house’ from scratch to join the fairy doors.

Local businesses and artists also came on board to add doors and signs to the growing attraction.

It also captured the imaginations of young visitors, who were soon bringing along their own trinkets to add to the collection.

Many of the items added to the wood were left as tributes to lost loved ones.

But earlier this week when Jo visited the woods, she discovered the fairy doors, signs and boxes had been ripped off trees and taken away.

Jo, who runs Fuzzy Goose in Cheadle Hulme, says she has been inundated with messages from people who are heartbroken by what has happened.

She said: “When I saw it I was completely gutted, not for me but for other people.

“One lady has just messaged me to say it has moved her to tears and she is so sickened by the evil that some people feel to be acceptable in this world.

“People have said ‘oh it’s teenagers’ but it isn’t. It isn’t kids that have done this.

“Someone has gone and taken a lot of time and effort to unscrew it all, just because they don’t like it.

Jo doesn’t know who is responsible for destroying the trail, but she knows it had its detractors. She had received a number of complaints about people parking on public roads to visit the trail.

However, the destruction of the trail has sparked a huge community response and Jo says it has only spurred people on to rebuild it.

They have vowed that the trail will return and be bigger and better than it was before.
