Hendo out to be part of Ammies history

- By CHARLIE GREGORY

IAN Henderson has set his sights on being a part of Salford City’s history as the Ammies look to boost their promotion credentials with a trip to in-form Newport County today.

Victory over Scunthorpe United in midweek moved the side up to fifth and only three points behind League Two pacesetters Carlisle United, but the 35-year-old forward says neither he nor his teammates are getting carried away.

He told M.E.N. Sport: “We’re never going to be happy, being happy with a certain position creates contentment and that is a disease in itself. We want to keep on pushing one another to maximise the potential of the squad.

“We want the players here and now to be part of success and the history of the football club and really stamp their own take on it to help the club move to where it wants to go to.”

Since Richie Wellens took over as manager 73 days ago, no side has picked up more points in the fourth tier than Salford (20 from a possible 36) and Henderson admits that there is a growing belief within the squad that promotion is a possibility.

“I think everything’s starting to even itself up and it’s setting up an exciting second half of the season.

“[Targeting promotion] is the reason why I signed and a host of other players did too. The club has made it clear they want to get promoted so it has to be a realistic objective, otherwise I don’t think those players would have come if it wasn’t to try and be a part of the history of the club.”

Meanwhile, the Ammies have completed the loan signing of 21-year-old central midfielder Robbie Gotts from Leeds United until the end of the season and he is available to play today.
