Time for an agreement?

-

BILL Newham and I have quite often, in these columns, put our views from opposite sides of the fence but I must congratulate him on his summing-up (Viewpoints, January 9) of Boris Johnson’s characteristics and his qualities as Prime Minister.

I will not labour the point that Bill and I have differing views on Brexit but it is quite obvious to me that if we were to sit down together with a cup of tea we would find a great deal to be agreeable about and we would not find it overly difficult to discover respect for our differing views.

Is this not something we should all be making great efforts to do as we struggle with the pandemic and face a changed future in a wider world?

Brexit has been terribly divisive for our society and it is quite evident that friendships, family relationships, even marriages have been strained, sometimes to breaking point.

The pandemic has shaken everyone but if it has taught us anything it is that society, in its noblest form, does exist, perhaps a little dormant at times, but ready to emerge in times of need.

As a Remainer I am sorry that Brexit has happened and I am worried about the outcome in the future, Bill as a Leaver will be pleased but we both wish the best for our families and for our country. There is no argument that for the sake of future generations there is a great deal to do.

Apart from the big controversial issues like climate change and clean energy we must not forget the army of low-paid workers whose goodwill is often treated with contempt by those in authority and overlooked by the rest of us who take their services for granted.

Discussion and argument are useful and can lead to greater information and improved responsibility but disagreement amongst ourselves should not allow the government of the day, of whatever political stripe, to remain complacent and ignore the need for reform.
