Telles has pushed me to improve, reveals Shaw

- By TYRONE MARSHALL

LUKE Shaw put his recent good form down to the competition for places at United after the summer addition of Brazil international Alex Telles.

The Reds spent £15.4m to sign Telles from Porto but his arrival has led to the England international raising his game once again and the 25-year-old is arguably in the best form of his Old Trafford career.

He kept Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane quiet at Anfield and created United’s best chance with a driving run down the left.

“I feel really good, credit to Ole for that for believing in me and pushing me,” Shaw said.

“Alex as well, we have a great relationship, he pushes me each day in training and we get on.

“It’s nice to have that competition, we pushed each other to get the best out of ourselves. It’s a positive way for both of us to look at it.”

Midway through the first half at Anfield Salah and Mane swapped wings, with the Egyptian stymied by Shaw, who repeated the trick by shackling Mane as well.

“This is why you come to clubs like this, to play against the best players in massive games, you look forward to tests like this, they’re the best in the world in their best position, but we all defended really well tonight and we need to keep doing that,” he said.

Bruno Fernandes was the recipient of the chance Shaw created late on, but he was foiled by Alisson, who also denied Paul Pogba.

“We didn’t start well at all, but we stuck in and defended well and towards the end we had the better chances and two chances on another day we’d have scored,” said Shaw. “We came here to win, not to get a point.”
