Love moves in mysterious ways in writer-director Christophe
Honore’s Nineties-set gay romance. HIV-positive writer Jacques (Pierre Deladonchamps) has resigned himself to the idea that he will never forge a meaningful connection with another man. He puts up emotional defences until he wanders into a cinema and catches a glimpse of the much younger Arthur (Vincent Lacoste, pictured with Deladonchamps) in the dark. Unlike Jacques, Arthur is at the beginning of his journey of self-discovery as a gay man and he is keen to explore every facet of his identity. The two strangers enjoy each other’s company and agree to meet again. The men’s feelings intensify but Jacques has commitments to his dying ex-lover Marco (Thomas Gonzalez).

ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL Tomorrow, Film4, 6.55pm
Socially awkward high school student Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) visits estranged childhood friend Rachel Kushner (Olivia Cooke, pictured), who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. To impress his high school crush, Greg agrees to make a film for Rachel with his creative partner Earl (RJ Cyler) in this beautifully judged rites-of-passage drama.

UNSANE Tuesday, Film4, 9pm
Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy, left) has moved from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape a barrage of texts from unstable admirer David Strine (Joshua Leonard). She visits a behavioural centre offering support to victims of stalking, but is horrified to discover a nurse bearing a spooky resemblance to David. Unsane is a hallucinogenic mind trip.

THE MATRIX Wednesday, ITV4, 10pm
Computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves, left) is charged with enlightening the human race to the fact that reality, as they know it, isn’t all that it appears, in this sci-fi smash. It turns out everyone is living in a computer simulation, but Neo is plucked out of the hi-tech illusion by a team of freedom fighters determined to reveal the truth.

A UNITED KINGDOM Thursday, BBC4, 9pm
In this true story, Prince Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), heir apparent to the nation of Bechuanaland – now Botswana – is studying law in Britain in 1947 when he falls for white British clerk Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, pictured with Oyelowo). Their plan to marry sparks a diplomatic firestorm and domestic political tumult.

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE Friday, Film4, 11.20pm
Unflinching revenge thriller based on Jonathan Ames’ novella of the same title. Traumatised war veteran-turned-hitman Joe (Joaquin Phoenix, left) accepts a meeting with a senator whose teenage daughter Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov) is missing. The politician has received a tip-off that his girl is a sex slave in a brothel in Manhattan.

KNIGHT AND DAY Saturday, Channel 4, 10pm
Strap yourself in for high-octane fun, as Cameron Diaz plays air passenger June Haven, who finds herself caught in the crossfire between fugitive government agent Roy Miller (Tom Cruise, left with Diaz) and the assassins hired to kill him. Miller has been framed as a traitor and drags June on a wild ride as he fights to clear his name.
