Pep’s right to expect Mah from us!

- By JOE BRAY

RIYAD Mahrez agrees with what his manager said after City boss Pep Guardiola warned his players they would be dropped if standards dipped.

The Blues beat Wolves to move 15 points clear in the Premier League. It was their 21st win in a row, and a 28th game unbeaten, equalling their own club record.

Mahrez had a hand in City’s first two goals against a resilient Wolves side either side of Conor Coady’s equaliser.

The Algerian then scored a third to put the game beyond doubt late on and Gabriel Jesus added a fourth before full-time.

Mahrez praised the side’s attitude in a match that looked to be a frustrating one for long periods.

He said: “It was a tough game, I think we started very, very good, scored first, created chances, we could have killed game in the first half.

“We were offside for maybe this small [gesture, above, in reference to Aymeric Laporte’s offside goal].

“Second half it was more difficult, they pressed higher, but we still created chances.

“They managed to score. We finished very good, never gave up, kept pressing and creating chances until we scored.

“Sometimes you can have the ball for even 95 per cent but have to kill the game. We didn’t do it first half and that always leaves the chance for an opponent to come back.

“The last 10 minutes was so good. We scored and we finished the game. We are so happy and now we need to keep going.” everyone is thinking the job is done, these guys are not going to play. I am so intuitive to know when the guys are not going to continue. The champions are Liverpool, we are not.”

And in response, Mahrez accepted his manager’s one-game-at-a-time approach was the only way to navigate the season.

He explained: “We compete very good with each other, it’s the only way to improve the team and the squad. We have to play game-by-game and see what happens.

“The next game is United in the derby and we have to stay focussed to win this game.

“It’s difficult when you change six or seven players but the quality of every player is so good. Everyone makes his contributions and it’s very good for the team.”
