Silly errors cost us dear - Kewell

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

OLDHAM boss Harry Kewell admits ‘silly mistakes’ cost his side in their 2-0 defeat to Bolton.

A first-half strike from former Latics striker Eoin Doyle and an own goal from Harry Clarke saw the visitors dominate proceedings at Boundary Park.

Defender Kyle Jameson was also sent off before the break in what turned out to be an 11th home league defeat this season.

Latics were behind midway through the first half as Clarke connected with Gethin Jones’ ball into the box and deflected it into his own net on 19 minutes.

They were reduced to 10 minutes later when a reckless tackle on Nathan Delfuenso from Jameson saw the Latics defender shown a straight red card by referee James Oldham.

Things got worse six minutes before the break as Doyle reacted first to the rebound from Oladapo Afolayan’s shot and the former Oldham striker smashed in from close range. Latics improved in the second half and had a late chance for a consolation through Callum Whelan’s shot after 89 minutes but it was easily saved by goalkeeper Matt Gilks.

“We let a silly goal in and then in the first half the challenge (for the red card) killed us,” said Kewell.

“If we’d have kept it at 1-0, I think then we could have had something. 2-0 is always going to be difficult.

“But for us, the second-half performance was solid, the only chances they had were from our mistakes - silly mistakes.”

■ ROCHDALE slipped to second from bottom of League One as they lost 2-0 at Hull City. They also had Conor Shaughnessy sent off in the 77th minute.

In the National League, Altrincham snapped a five-game losing run as they clinched a 1-0 win at home to Woking thanks to Matty Kosylo’s winner, having been reduced to 10 men with the 34th-minute dismissal of Tom Hannigan.
