Woman blasted by gunman as she walks dog
A MASKED gunman blasted a woman in the leg as she walked her dog.
The victim, 30, was on Olanyian Drive, Cheetham Hill, on Tuesday evening when the shooter pulled up in a black Fiat 500.
She was hit in the back of the leg as she tried to flee.
The gunman had stepped from the vehicle, driven by a second man. The car was later found abandoned in Crumpsall.
Police say the dispute behind the incident is not linked to an 18-month feud between two crime groups in Cheetham Hill and a third from Broughton, Salford.
It is also not connected to a stabbing in Salford a day earlier on nearby Albert Road, Broughton, when a boy of 15 was injured after youths began fighting with knives during the afternoon.
A large police cordon was erected on Olanyian Drive on Tuesday evening.
Officers were called at about 6.30pm to reports that a woman had arrived at hospital with a gunshot wound to her leg.
She remains in hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.
GMP are following a number of lines of enquiry as an investigation was launched by detectives. They believe the victim was shot at about 6pm.
A large part of Olanyian Drive and Everest Drive in Cheetham Hill were taped off by police on Wednesday.
GMP said: “At around 6.30pm on Tuesday 9 March, police were called by hospital staff to a report of a woman presenting with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg.
“The woman – aged 30 – remains in a stable condition in hospital as she continues with her recovery.
“Initial enquiries suggest the incident took place shortly before 6pm... and was a targeted attack.
“It is understood the woman was walking her dog on Olanyian Drive when a man wearing a balaclava got out of a dark Fiat 500 and fired a single shot from a handgun in the back of the victim’s leg as she ran away.
“Two men are then believed to have made off in the car towards Bury New Road. A car matching the description of the offending vehicle has since been recovered.
“No arrests have been made and a scene remains in place on Olanyian Drive and part of Everside Drive while a number of lines of enquiry remain ongoing.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
Detective Inspector Charlotte Quinn, of GMP’s Central Park CID, said: “This is a shocking incident where a woman was deliberately targeted as she walked down the street, and I would like to reassure the community we have a team working meticulously to identify those involved.’’
