‘It was really scary – like something on television’

RESIDENTS SAY GANG CHASED MAN, PULLED HIM FROM CAR AND ‘BEAT HIM UP’

- By LOUISA GREGSON

RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a gang of youths reportedly chased a man before pulling him from his car and assaulting him.

The incident, which happened at around 9.15pm on Monday, on Albert Gardens, Failsworth left a 22-year-old man with head and leg injuries.

One resident said he had watched the drama unfold from a bedroom window and likened it to something on TV.

He told the M.E.N.: “There were three cars right in front of you, a red Golf, a BMW and an Audi.

“I saw the BMW run into the back of the red Golf. There was a big bang and then a popping noise like fireworks. It was the windows being put through with some implement or other.

“There were about half a dozen youths all dressed in black.

“They were running around like they were chasing each other. They got hold of one youth and leathered him.

“One youth grabbed him and threw him into the back of the Audi and then reversed up the road at speed.

“The Audi came back about five minutes later and the driver was looking into the Golf for something and took some phones. I could see there were little packets all over the floor. “The whole street was out watching it.

“This is a quiet cul-de-sac and nothing like this ever happens.

“You see it on the television but when it happens on your street, in real life, it is shocking.”

A woman who lived directly opposite the scene said: “I was in the house and suddenly heard a lot of youths. “There was a lot of crashing and it sounded like bins being moved.

“I went to the front door and there was a gang of lads and a big fight going on.” The woman said she saw hammers and knives, but GMP said they were unable to confirm whether any weapons were used in the incident.

“They smashed the side window of a red car, pulled him out and beat him up”, she added. “Then one of the lads jumped over my gate and ran through my back garden.

“I was scared as I had family inside. “It was all so shocking and a scary experience.”
