Thug’s sickening attack

- By JOHN SCHEERHOUT

A HEROIN dealer who was high on drugs launched a sickening assault on a newsagent who tried to throw him out of his shop

Kian Oliver was on police bail for drug dealing when he repeatedly punched and kicked his terrified victim in the head and even threw a metal a chair at him while he was on the ground.

Now the 20-year-old, who has a baby son, has been jailed.

Oliver, then 19, launched a sickening assault on a shopkeeper inside a newsagent on Bradford Road in Miles Platting on November 21, some eight months after his drugs arrest.

He walked into the shop at 3.30pm but the concerned shopkeeper ‘challenged’ him and then asked him to leave, the court heard.

Oliver slammed a perspex door into the shopkeeper and punched and kicked him to the head repeatedly. The defendant pinned his victim to the ground with his left hand and then kneed him in the head, before raining more kicks and punches onto the terrified shopkeeper.

As he tried to crawl away from the 30-second onslaught, Oliver kicked his victim in the backside and threw a metal chair at him, the court was told.

The attack was only brought to an end when police arrived at shop and detained Oliver.

Officers strip-searched him back at the police station and found eight wraps of heroin and £265 in cash.

He gave officers a prepared statement in which he claimed the drugs were for personal use, the court was told.

He added: “I’m truly sorry for the assault. I’m not usually a violent person. I do not think this could have happened if I was not under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”

His victim was taken to hospital with a swollen right eye, lumps on his head and suffering from head pain. No fractures were detected.

Oliver, who had no previous convictions, was diagnosed with depression, ADHD and PTSD, the court was told.

The judge, Mr Recorder Kealey QC, jailed Oliver for a total of five years, two-and-a-half years for the February drugs offences, a further two years for another drugs offence committed whilst on bail for drug dealing and six months for the assault.

Oliver, now 20, of Hadlow Walk in Miles Platting, Manchester, had earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
