1985

MARCH 24: Manchester City captain Paul Power takes a break from training to play a spot of golf.

The defender and midfielder was the only remaining member of the Blues’ team to play in the First Division before relegation in 1983 – and was determined to lead them back to the top flight.

He managed to achieve his aim as City finished third in the Second Division in the 1984-5 season and were duly promoted.

Born in Openshaw, Power played 365 league games for the Blues from 1975 to 1986, scoring 26 goals.

The United side were still in profound shock after the Munich air disaster of February 6th in which eight team-mates lost their lives.

Webster did not travel with the team due to ill health; Charlton was pulled from the wreckage by goalkeeper Harry Gregg.

APRIL 2: A roll of honour showing the members of the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) who gave their lives in the Second World War is presented at St Ann’s Church, Manchester.

The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Alderman Samuel Percy Dawson, inspected the roll before it was displayed at Westminster Abbey, its permanent home. The WVS was formed in 1938 in order to play a key role in air-raid precautions and civil defence.
