‘Manager deserves contract – but must win something’
PAUL Scholes thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘deserves’ a new contract at United, but also issued him a warning.
Recent reports have suggested that Ed Woodward is set to reward the United boss with a new deal at Old Trafford.
It’s been a season of undoubted progression for the Reds in the Premier League, with the side sitting in second-place - but 14 points off champions elect City.
United’s attacking play has also improved under Solskjaer, something Scholes was quick to address when talking about his former team-mate potentially being handed a new contract at the club.
Speaking on Webby & O’Neill, the ex-United midfielder said: “I think he probably deserves it. There’s been progress from the manager before. I think the team looks a lot better, it’s much more exciting, there’s goals in the team - which you always expect from a United team, anyway.”
Scholes then sent a slight
warning, saying: “I think the only problem is: win something. Losing four semi-finals last season is a little bit of a worry I suppose.
“Losing the quarter-final to Leicester, it wasn’t good. For fans especially, the Europa League was tough in Milan, I thought players looked a little bit jaded - Fernandes especially. He probably did need the rest against Leicester, but on the other hand, I don’t think United are in a position to rest people for the big games.
“I think they have 12 or 13 players that are good enough to go and win a lot of games. Is the squad then deep enough when you’re leaving these big players out to go on and win the bigger games?”
