A NEW project is set to keep Tameside youngsters active and well-fed during the school holidays.

Fuel 4 Fun has been launched this Easter and will run in each school holiday period until March 2022.

The scheme will provide free school holiday activities, healthy lunches, sports activity bags and take-home family food boxes to more than 400 children aged five to 13.

Dan Higgins, from Active Tameside, said: “Fuel 4 Fun is a fantastic initiative that allows us, along with our key stakeholders within the local authority, to support young people using sport and physical activity as an engagement tool whilst educating them around healthy eating.

“Great emphasis is placed on the holistic development of all, improving both their physical and mental wellbeing.”

Active Tameside is working with Tameside Council and the Department

of Education to run the scheme, using cash from the borough’s holiday activity and food funding.

It will target 10,000 families in the borough who are in receipt of free school meals or pupil premium, while also supporting under-18s with special education needs or disabilities. Youngsters will enjoy a range of activities including sport, dance, gardening, nature trails, cooking, arts and crafts, and swimming.

Each day they will also take home a box of ingredients – including donations from FareShare, local supermarkets and food grown on community allotments – all ready to be prepared into a healthy family meal with video tutorials available to help. Meanwhile, more than 20 young people are being recruited as sports coaches from Tameside colleges as part of the programme, as well as youngsters not in education, employment or training.
