Greenwood can make role his own – Scholes

- By DAVID BYROM

PAUL SCHOLES has challenged Mason Greenwood to nail down the centreforward spot at United.

Greenwood’s best position has often been the source of debate among fans and pundits, with the 19-year-old generally featuring either on the right wing or in a centre-forward position.

The young attacker’s finishing has been heavily praised and his winning goal against Brighton at the weekend was an example of his improved movement after working with Edinson Cavani.

With Anthony Martial likely out for the season and Cavani struggling for fitness at times, United legend Scholes believes Greenwood now has the opportunity to stake a claim to become the Reds’ first-choice striker.

Speaking on BT Sport during United’s 2-0 win at Granada last night, Scholes said Greenwood’s age means it is only natural that he will go through periods of inconsistency.

He added: “He’s a brilliant player, very young still so he’s inconsistent at times.

“Again, United’s forwards, they all seem to be the same. We don’t know if they’re a wide player or a number nine.

“Obviously, with Cavani, there’s more experience but the legs are going a bit.

“They say this lad should be the one out of three that is the number nine and I think he’s the best finisher at the club, but when he’s in those wide areas, he doesn’t get that many chances which is a problem.

“In these next few games, possibly, he’s got the chance to make the number nine position his own.”
