1993

April 10: Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs is presented with the PFA Young Player of the Year award at Old Trafford for the second year running.

He accepted the trophy before the Premier League match against Sheffield Wednesday which the Red Devils won 2-1. Both United’s goals were scored by centre half and captain Steve Bruce.

United, under Alex Ferguson, went on to become the inaugural Premier League champions with a total of 84 points, 10 ahead of secondplaced Aston Villa. Mark Hughes was the team’s top scorer for the season with 16 goals in all competitions.

1975

April 13: Young men recreate the Teddy Boy look of the 1950s and 60s a decade later in Manchester.

The trademark tapered trousers, long jackets and fancy waistcoats are all there – along with thick-soled shoes, bootlace ties and elaborately quiffed hairstyles.

Teddy Boy fashions resulted from tailors in London devising a new style to sell off Edwardian clothes after World War II.

The word Edwardian was shortened to Teddy – more suited to the rock and roll fans who adopted the look.

1970

April 7: Katharine, the Duchess of Kent is pictured outside Manchester Town Hall during an official visit to the city.

Married to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, the Duchess is well-known for her interest in music and has performed in a number of choirs.

In 1994, she became the first member of the royal family to convert to Catholicism since the Act of Settlement was passed in 1701.
