‘Man of the People’ is back in Super League with Centurions

ANTHONY Gelling is set for a surprise return to Super League with Leigh Centurions.

The self-proclaimed ‘Man of the People’ has signed a shortterm deal with the Centurions that will keep him at the club for around two months.

The Cook Islands international was at Warrington Wolves last year but departed at the end of the season after coming to a mutual agreement with the club.

But the 30-year-old is now set for his third stint in the competition after returning to the UK and will link up with John Duffy’s side.

His arrival helps fill a void in the Leigh squad, with centre Junior Sa’u set to miss the majority of the season through injury.

Young winger Craig Mullen played at centre during their defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday, highlighting their current issues in the backline.

The club still has two quota spots unoccupied, leaving them free to finalise a deal for Gelling.

Starting his career at Wigan, he was part of the Warriors side that won the 2016 Grand Final and played in the World Club Challenge triumph over Cronulla Sharks the year after.

After more than 100 appearances, he departed Wigan to return to New Zealand after his partner was involved in a car crash.

After spending the 2018 season in the NRL with New Zealand Warriors, Gelling returned to the UK with Widnes Vikings before signing for Warrington in 2020.

The Centurions are expected to confirm his arrival later this week.
