Town’s Covid infections nearly double in 7 days

SPIKE ACROSS REGION AS CASE RATE SOARS IN ONE BOROUGH

THOUSANDS more cases of coronaviru­s have been recorded in Greater Manchester as the number of infections nationally has reached a three-month high.

The number of UK infections is up by 23 per cent in the space of a week, with another 45,140 cases recorded yesterday. Yesterday’s rise is the largest since July 20.

In Greater Manchester, rates are spiking in eight boroughs, according to the latest data from Public Health England. And infection rates in one area have nearly doubled in the last seven day period.

The number of cases per 100,000 people in Rochdale rose by 47 per cent in the week ending October 13.

Trafford still has the highest infection rate across the conurbatio­n by some distance, with 707.6 cases per 100,000 people recorded in the last seven day period.

Cases are starting to fall there though, with the infection rate dropping by 10 per cent week-on-week. The area has dropped to number eleven on the list of national coronaviru­s hotspots.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 418.7 cases per 100,000 population, which is currently lower than the national average of 423.6.

A total of 11,872 people tested positive for coronaviru­s across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on October 13.

The weekly total has increased by 1,081 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was up 10 per cent in the last seven days.

A total of 34 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 11 fewer than the week before.

Rochdale recorded 964 coronaviru­s cases, which is 308 more than in the previous seven days.

Bolton, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 813 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending October 13, which is 51 more than the previous seven days. Its infection rate is now 282.0 cases per 100,000 people.

The trend is up in Wigan, where there were 1,360 positive Covid-19 tests, which is 197 more than the previous seven days. That is up by 17 per cent compared to the previous week.

There was a rise of nine per cent in cases in Oldham over the week ending October 13, and the infection rate is now 362.3 cases per 100,000 population. The town recorded 861 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period – 71 more than the previous week.

There were 1,694 positive tests over the last week in Stockport, which is 70 more than in the week before.

The latest infection rate is 575.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Salford saw a total of 1,046 cases in the week ending October 13, which is 185 more than the previous week. That is a rise of 21 per cent. Its most recent coronaviru­s infection rate is now 398.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Manchester is an area where the trend is up. The latest infection rate here is 303.0 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 1,684 cases recorded in Manchester, which is 318 more than the previous week – a rise of 23 per cent.

In Tameside, the latest infection rate is 495.8 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone up by six per cent.

A total of 1,126 people tested positive for Covid in Tameside over the seven days ending on October 13, which is 66 more than the week before.

In Bury, the number of cases is down compared to the previous week, which the infection rate at 337.2 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 643 positive Covid-19 tests in Bury in the week ending October 13, which was one fewer than the previous seven days.
