Police ‘disgusted’ with derby match fan trouble
POLICE have slammed the ‘disgusting’ behaviour of some fans during derby match between Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
The Trotters were thrashed 4-0 in front of a bumper crowd of more than 20,000 but the afternoon was marred by trouble and Greater Manchester Police confirmed arrests had been made for public disorder offences and assault of a police officer.
Supporters in the away section removed some of the advertising displays from one of the stands, which then had to be collected by stewards and police while supporters in the home end threw objects onto the pitch, which then had to be cleared, while flares were thrown by both sets of fans.
Chief Superintendent Colette Rose, from GMP, said on Saturday: “I am saddened that a group of individuals
took it upon themselves to ruin the game today for the rest of the fans.
“The game had to be paused several times due to objects being thrown on to the pitch and one of our officers was assaulted, as well as rival supporters causing disorder following the game.
“This is quite frankly disgusting behaviour and will not be tolerated in any shape or form.
“We will continue to work closely with the football clubs to carry out a full investigation into the criminal activity that occurred today and bring those involved to justice.
“Our officers were present in the stadium at the time the offences happened and swiftly removed those responsible.”
Following the match, a Bolton Wanderers spokesman said: “A number of spectators from both clubs were ejected following incidents in the second half when objects - including pyrotechnics - were thrown onto the pitch.
“Wanderers will continue to work closely with Greater Manchester Police to identify offenders and take action.”
Wanderers boss Ian Evatt said after the game: “The minority always spoils it for everybody else and we can’t and shouldn’t have to see that on a football pitch. We understand that they’re annoyed. We understand they’re frustrated, but when that happens, all you’re going to do is harm the football club and ourselves.”
