Pensioner, 91 dies after he is hit by car – as woman, 89 fights for life

A 91-YEAR-OLD man has died after being struck by a car.

The man was taken to hospital following the collision on Swan Lane, Hindley Green, Wigan, on Monday evening but has now died, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

An 89-year-old woman was left critically injured and is fighting for life.

Police arrested a 22-year-old woman at the scene, who has since been released under investigat­ion.

Officers are now appealing for any witnesses or dash cam footage.

A GMP spokesman said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after a man has died, and a woman was left with life threatenin­g injuries after being hit by a car in Wigan.

“Officers were called to Swan Lane just before 7pm on Monday 18 October to reports two pedestrian­s had been hit by a car.

“Emergency services attended, and a 91-year-old man, and 89-year-old woman were taken to hospital with lifethreat­ening injuries. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency care staff, the 91-year-old man passed away overnight (Thursday, October 21).

“The 89-year-old woman remains in a critical condition. A 22-year-old woman was arrested at the scene, and has been released under investigat­ion. “Officers are continuing to investigat­e the circumstan­ces around what happened, and are keen to speak to anyone who may have any informatio­n.”

Pc Karl Horner, of the Serious Collisions Investigat­ions Unit, added: “This was a tragic incident in which an elderly man has now sadly lost his life. Our thoughts are very much with his loved ones at this awful time.”
