Thug broke ex’s jaw after she ‘spoke to man in bar’

- By AMY WALKER

A MAN left his ex-girlfriend with a broken eye socket and jaw in a brutal attack after she ‘spoke to a man at a bar.’

Jason Conway, 32, had been out drinking with his former partner of three years in bar Duke’s 92 in Manchester, but on their taxi ride home things became heated.

He began arguing with her once they got inside her apartment and launched into a ‘tirade’ about a man she was talking to at the bar, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Conway, of Risbury Walk, Newton Heath, took her keys from her bag then grabbed hold of her whilst the pair were on the balcony.

“She felt unable to escape, and so went back inside the apartment and locked the balcony door, leaving him outside,” prosecutor Megan Tollitt said.

“She saw the defendant climb over the railings to the opposite side and became concerned he was going to jump off so opened the door to let him back in.

“He came in and punched her in the mouth which caused considerable pain to her right cheek and around the eye socket.”

The woman attended at A&E a few days later after the attack, which happened on June 12, and was treated for a fracture to her right eye socket, a fracture to her right cheek and her upper jaw.

Conway handed himself into the police and was arrested, and told officers that they had been arguing about a man in a bar.

He added that he had thrown a perfume bottle at the wall which bounced off and struck her to the left cheek. He was released on bail with a condition of non contact with his ex.

However, on August 6, Conway had stayed overnight at her apartment,

but the following morning he had confronted her about going to bed early and ‘being funny with him.’

“He said: “I’m going to kill you, you’re f***ing evil,” and then tried to headbutt her, but she put her hand up to stop him.”

The woman said she sustained no injuries but described feeling frightened by the incident.

Conway was said to have 11 previous convictions for 23 offences including offences of battery, threats to kill and having a bladed article.

Mitigating, his defence lawyer Laura Broome said he accepted full responsibility for his actions, but stated that contact was made on both sides.

“Clearly he is someone who struggles with substance misuse of alcohol and cocaine,” she said.

Sentencing him to 27 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and common assault, Judge Suzanne Goddard QC said: “It’s a classic case of someone who uses alcohol, uses drugs and uses women - you can’t control yourself.

“It’s about time you grow up, face up to your problems and start paying attention to bringing up your young son and making yourself the father you want to be. It’s entirely up to you.”
