‘Fury can’t call himself greatest’

- By JOSH CHALLIES

DILLIAN Whyte has stated that Tyson Fury cannot call himself the greatest heavyweight of all time, ranking the fighter below his rivals in history.

Fury overcame Deontay Wilder in a trilogy bout earlier this month that will be remembered as one of the finest fights in heavyweight history.

Fury is now waiting to find out his next opponent and it could be Whyte, who is ranked among the WBC’s leading contenders to challenge for the belt.

He would have cemented his status as mandatory challenger with victory against Otto Wallin this weekend but pulled out of the fight due to injury.

While fans wait to see what moves the WBC will make, and whether the bout against Wallin will be rescheduled, Whyte has issued his assessment on Fury’s career.

“Who has he fought? Deontay Wilder and [Wladimir] Klitschko... he can’t call himself the greatest,” he told CNN.

“OK, you might be the best heavyweight around in your era now because you haven’t lost, then you beat everyone put in front of you. But you’re not the greatest.

“You haven’t even achieved half of what Lennox Lewis has achieved, Muhammed Alit, Joe Frazier, George Foreman - all of these guys.”

Whyte is keen to face Fury, believing the WBC should order the title bout, adding: “I want to fight the best fighters in the world and Tyson Fury is the man at the minute, he’s the undefeated heavyweight champion, he’s the one that’s won all the belts.

“I bring power and explosiveness and aggression. One thing with me is I target the head and the body.

“A lot of guys seem to headhunt Fury.

“And he just moves his head around and stays out of range and stuff and no-one targets his body, but I’ll target his head and his body every minute of every round.”
