A NURSE feared she’d be killed after being brutally attacked by a patient who grabbed her head and started ‘sawing away’ at her neck.

Faisal Janny, 36, shouted ‘you will die’ as he tried to cut her throat, while she worked a night shift at North Manchester General hospital.

Janny, who has paranoid schizophrenia and was a patient on a mental health ward, was later overheard saying he had attacked the nurse because staff were ‘doing his head in.’

Manchester Crown Court heard that the ‘butter knife’ was fortunately not pointed or very sharp. The nurse, who has 25 years experience and was studying for a degree, now says she is looking for a job in another profession.

“It was a terrifying ordeal for her,” Judge Alan Conrad QC said. “She has had to abandon the profession to which she was devoted.”

The nurse was working at the mental health unit in the early hours of July 22, 2019, when she became aware of Janny walking up and down the ward, said prosecutor Matthew Curtis said.

When she asked Janny whether he was okay, he said he was ‘just walking up and down the corridor.’ At about 3am she started to feel ‘uneasy’ after noticing that Janny began following her as she did her rounds.

She spoke with the two other nurses on duty, who believed his ‘unusual’ behaviour may be because he was being given extra diazepam.

After asking Janny whether he wanted a cup of hot chocolate to help him sleep, he produced a butter knife from behind his back.

He grabbed hold of her hair and pulled her head back, before he started ‘sawing away’ at her neck. Janny was shouting ‘you will die’

She was on the floor and tried to crawl out of the room, but Janny dragged her back by her hair and then started stamping on her head and back. The other nurses heard her screams and came to help, as Janny shouted ‘witch, witch.’ They watched on in horror as Janny tried to ‘cut her throat,’ before they managed to get him off her.

She was taken to A&E at the hospital after suffering cuts to her face and lips, as well as swelling. Janny’s attack had a devastating effect on the nurse, who is now looking for a new job. The attack caused her to lose a tooth and caused two cracked teeth, which could cost £27,000 to repair.

Her long-term relationship ended, which she put it down to the stress caused by her ordeal.

The judge sentenced him to an indefinite hospital order. Janny, who is now at Prestwich hospital, will undergo treatment and will not be released until it is deemed safe to do so.

He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
