‘Monster’ raped girl after date with mum

- By LYNDA ROUGHLEY

A SCHOOLGIRL was raped by a man who had earlier been out on a first date with her mum.

The victim, 14, told how she woke to find ‘like an actual monster climbing across the bed,’ a court was told.

Matthew Philbin – described by a judge as ‘a predatory, violent and determined’ rapist – hit the teenager and grabbed her hair during a struggle, then told her he would shoot her if she screamed, a prosecutor said.

A court heard the attack ended when the girl’s mum ran into her daughter’s bedroom – but Philbin told her she must have had a nightmare.

The court was told the girl was pleased her mum had found someone new in her life, but her happiness turned to horror just a few hours later.

Philbin – who had taken cocaine and alcohol – was ushered outside by the girl’s mum and locked in the back garden. Police were called and found him hiding wearing just shorts and socks. They also found he had Viagra in a bag.

Philbin, 33, of Duckinfield Farm, Hurst Lane, Warrington, pleaded guilty to rape. He was jailed for eight years.

Judge Stuart Driver QC ruled Philbin was a dangerous offender and described him on the night as ‘a predatory, violent, determined rapist of a child.’ He said Philbin had ‘admitted nosing about upstairs’ before the rape and added: “I am satisfied you were planning this offence.

“It was an explosive crime fuelled by cocaine and alcohol. The impact upon the vulnerable victim is profound.”

Judge Driver also imposed on Philbin an extended five year licence. Liverpool Crown Court heard the victim had

briefly met Philbin earlier on in the night but by the time her mum returned home with him, at about 11pm, she was in her bedroom. Philbin repeatedly went upstairs, ostensibly to the toilet, but was actually ‘nosing around,’ said Lee Bonner, prosecuting. At around 4am, she awoke to find him half-naked at the foot of her bed.”

She later described it to police as ‘just weird and it didn’t even feel real. It was like an actual monster climbing across the bed.’ Mr Bonner said: “He hit her across the head and put his hand across her mouth while she was screaming for her mum. He backed her into a corner of the room and told her ‘If you scream, I’m going to shoot you.’ He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her down onto the bed. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered various injuries to her face and ear.

Simeon Evans, defending, claimed Philbin had not planned the attack and was genuinely remorseful. Philbin was also ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, together with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order.
