Carnivores meat their match in giant steak

IT’S the size of a new-born baby, comes smothered in garlic butter and costs £60.

But punters are still queuing up to take on a pub’s latest food challenge.

The Black Ladd in Shaw, Oldham, is serving up a 100oz rump steak, alongside onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes and chips, and anyone able to polish off the 6,000-calorie meal eats for free.

So far the one and only challenger was defeated halfway through the one-hour sitting.

General manager Keiran Leach is convinced no-one will finish the monster meal, which contains three daysworth of calories for the average woman, but has already taken a flurry of calls from eager eaters desperate to have a go.

Keiran, 25, said: “The first person had a good go at it but he took the other half home with him, which will probably do his teas for the rest of the week.

“You get people that travel all over the country to take on these challenges and there might be someone that’s experienced and very good that may be able to do it.

“But I think it would be one in a million, with the size it is.”

But the challenge has met with a mixed reception over health and climate concerns.

On social media, John Drogan wrote: “Given the news about climate change and the need to reduce meat intake, this post is in poor taste. You should be promoting more plant based food as it’s not just a fad – it’s the future.”

Jayne Burns said: “This is so old fashioned now.

“Bad for your health, really bad for the planet and bad for the cow that it came from… and there are so many better tasting things available now.”

Keiran said: “I’ve not seen the negative comments myself but the owner has mentioned it and we’re going to discuss it.

“I understand the point of it because it is a considerable amount of meat for one person but it’s them that are choosing to do that.

“From a business point of view we’re trying to get publicity but we do understand it’s a lot of meat for one person.”
