“His family and friends asks that people respect their privacy at this time but remember him for the joy he brought through his personality and music.

“You’ll be sadly missed.”

The post was accompanied by a black and white snap of Andrew smiling.

Happy Mondays singer Rowetta tweeted: “Absolutely heartbreaking news. Love you and will miss you Andy Barker.”

Former Hacienda resident DJ Dave Haslam wrote: “So sad to hear this about Andy Barker of 808 State.

“I first met him 35 years ago. He was a bringer of joy, a totally delightful fella.” The Warehouse Project’s Twitter page added: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Andrew Barker from 808 State.”

One fan wrote: “Heartbreaking news. My heart goes out to Andy’s family and friends.

“Had the pleasure of watching 808 State numerous times, also great memories watching The Spinmasters in The Thunderdome amongst other clubs. Andy’s music, knowledge and humour will never be forgotten. RIP.”

And another said: “So sad to hear this news about Andy. You were a true electronic music pioneer.”

Andrew was a member of the acid house pioneers, initially formed by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson, whose hits included In Yer Face, The Only Rhyme That Bites and Pacific State.

Andrew and Darren Partington, known as the Spinmasters, joined the group in 1989 following Gerald’s departure.

808 State took their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine.

The band released their debut album Newbuild in September 1988 and rose to fame in 1989 when their song Pacific State was picked up by BBC Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies, who first heard it in Ibiza and played it on daytime radio.
