Schmeichel: Time’s up for Donny at United
FORMER United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes the cut-off point has now been passed for Donny van de Beek to have a future at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman joined United in September last year from Dutch giants Ajax off the back of a hugely successful 2019/20 campaign, which saw him score ten goals and grab 11 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.
However, his time at Old Trafford has proven to be largely uninspiring, with the 24-year-old having played just 41 times for United in all competitions.
Van de Beek, who has scored just one goal in United colours, has made just five appearances in all competitions so far this season, only two of which have been starts.
He did step off the bench for the second game in a row against Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime, much to the delight of United’s fans, who cheered loudly, almost having a dig at Solskjaer, when he finally came on.
Despite having played in the last two games, Schmeichel, however, believes the damage on Van de Beek’s Old Trafford career has already been done.
Schmeichel
They spent an awful lot of money on him and there has been no attempt to ease him into the team
Peter Schmeichel
told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is very difficult to find the ins and outs or understand the ins and outs, of signing him.
“They spent an awful lot of money on him and there has been no attempt to ease him into the team. It has just been 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there and then you get the odd cup game that he has started in.
“It is not how you build up a good player, and he is a good player.
“We have seen what he did for Ajax and I kind of wonder what the whole idea behind signing him was.
“I think, you know, it has gone over the time where he can actually have a future at Old Trafford.”
