Salute to war heroes

REMEMBRANC­E SUNDAY SERVICES TO BE HELD AROUND REGION

GREATER Manchester fell silent yesterday at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Now thoughts turn to Remembranc­e Sunday when we will again salute the war dead at services throughout the region.

In Manchester, the annual service of remembranc­e will take place at the Cenotaph on St Peter’s Square.

Prior to this servicemen and women, service and ex-service organisati­ons, and uniformed organisati­ons will take part in Manchester’s Remembranc­e Day procession, which will set off from John Dalton Street at 10.25am. At 11am there will be a two-minute silence.

In Sale, the parade starts at 10.40am from Sale Masonic Hall, with a service at 10.55am at the town hall.

A service will take place at Rochdale Cenotaph, Rochdale Memorial Gardens at 10.50am.

In Oldham, a procession will assemble at New Radcliffe Street at 10.20am and proceed to the War Memorial at 10.30am. The War Memorial is opposite the Old Town Hall and the service will commence at 10.50am.

In Salford, a parade will assemble at Morrisons, Swinton Hall Road, at 10.10am and leave at 10.25am. The service and wreath laying commences at 10.50am at The Cenotaph, Salford Civic Centre.

In Eccles, the service will be held at The Cenotaph, Church Street. The parade assembles at the car park at the back of Eccles Town Hall, Church Street at 10.30am. The service and wreath laying commences at 10.50am.

In Ashton-under-Lyne, the parade assembles on Market Street at 9am and marches to Ashton Parish Church (capacity likely to be limited). After a service the parade proceeds to Ashton War Memorial for wreath-laying at 10.45am.

In Denton, the parade assembles at Denton Working Men’s Club, Grosvenor Street, at 10am and heads to Victoria Street remembranc­e garden to lay wreath. It then goes via Denton Town Hall to war memorial in Victoria Park for service of remembranc­e at 10.45am.

In Stalybridg­e, the parade leaves Armentiere­s Square at 10.30am and heads to Trinity Street war memorial for a service at 10.55am.

In Stockport, a procession starts at 10.15am from the Armoury to the War Memorial. At 10.45am the Civic procession commences from the Town Hall to the War Memorial. At 11am there will be a two-minute silence.

In Bury, the parade will leave the town hall at 10.30am and proceed to Market Place, where there will be a short service of remembranc­e.

This will be followed by a service at Bury Parish Church and a parade to the way to the Castle Armoury.
