Inquests open into tragic crash pair

- By NICK JACKSON

SEPARATE inquests have opened after two men died when the car they were in hit a tree and plunged down an embankment on a country road.

Karl Edward Young, 34, who was driving the car, and his front-seat passenger Reiss Jarvis, 21, both passed away from multiple injuries in hospital following the accident on Huddersfield Road, Delph, in Oldham, on November 10.

Karl, of Beckett Street, Lees, was the owner and chef at the Grill at Number 20 in Oldham town centre, and Reiss, of Beech Avenue, Oldham, was the bar manager, but had previously worked as a TV actor.

At the opening into both men’s inquests, assistant coroner Michael Salt, sitting at Rochdale Coroner’s Court, adjourned Reiss’ full inquest until May 10, next year, and the hearing for Karl will take place on May 11.

Coroner’s officer Pc Jane Scullion told the hearing Karl had been driving his Mazda 3 car on Huddersfield Road when it hit a tree and went down an embankment, landing in a field below.

She said both were taken to Royal Oldham Hospital but passed away shortly after arrival.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Emil Salmo revealed the cause of their deaths was multiple traumatic injuries.

Mr Salt has asked for reports to be compiled by Greater Manchester

Police’s collision investigation unit for both inquests.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, floral tributes were placed at the scene and several of Reiss’ friends turned out in shock at the loss of the young actor.

Pal Kieran Ackers said Reiss was ‘one in a million.’

Paying tribute to Karl following his death, his family said: “Karl was one of life’s truly lovely and genuine people. He was kind, gentle and loved by so many.”
