Waterfront homes plan for ‘island’

- By ALICE RICHARDSON Local Democracy Reporting Service

PLANS for more than 150 new homes have been submitted for an ‘island.’

It marks next stage in £1bn proposals from developers Peel L&P’s Manchester Waters development (previously referred to as Trafford Waters) and include 162 new homes for private rent across two apartment buildings at Pomona Island.

The proposed apartments sit within a wider masterplan for almost 3,000 new homes as part of the Manchester Waters development close to the Trafford Centre, which was approved by Trafford council back in 2018.

Peel L&P has now submitted its plans for the homes following a 10-day public consultation where the public could share their views on the scheme.

The proposals include the development of private rented apartments across two buildings. Peel said it is bringing forward the proposals “to help regenerate this vacant site and bring much needed quality homes along with significant improvements in the public realm and connectivity”.

The development will form part of a wider Manchester Waters masterplan to regenerate the vacant brownfield site close to Cornbrook Metrolink station. It will feature a range of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, a communal terrace, courtyard garden and lounge. There will be 42 car parking spaces, a cycle parking space for every apartment and electric vehicle charging points on site. The plans will also create part of two new waterfront pedestrian and cycleways along the Manchester Ship Canal and Bridgewater Canal. Peel said the proposals represent ‘a significant investment’ into the local area and are set to create new jobs throughout the construction stage. James Whittaker, Peel L&P’s executive director of development said: “The feedback received from the public consultation has been valuable, with a number of existing residents in the area coming forward to say that they really enjoy living by the canal front.”
