Bruce would be happy to help out as interim boss

- By STEPHEN KILLEN

STEVE Bruce would join United as interim boss, if asked.

The former Reds skipper was sacked by Newcastle after the Saudi-led takeover at St James’ Park.

The 60-year-old enjoyed nine successful years at Old Trafford during as a player, winning both the Premier League and FA Cup three times.

During his managerial tenure, he won promotion to the Premier League four times with Birmingham and Hull City before succeeding Rafael Benitez on Tyneside in 2019 after a spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

When asked if his father could take up a role at United, son Alex Bruce said: “I think everyone knows he has a great relationship with the club. If they needed him, I’m sure he would be there to help.

“I think they need to get a world-class, elite manager. If they can’t find someone at this present time, then I’m sure he would be up for it.

“In terms of the long-term, it’s important that the hierarchy get the next manager right and give whoever that person is time to improve the team and put Manchester United where they need to be.

“Dad carries a lot of experience. He knows a lot about the club. One thing you can say about the people there at the moment is that they don’t carry a lot of experience.

“Whether they want someone to come in and give them a hand for the time being if they don’t make that elite appointment, we’ll just have to watch this space.”

And Peter Schmeichel also believes his former team-mate could do a job at United.

“If it’s interim, get someone who knows the club, whose known by the club as well, get someone like Steve Bruce that would be fantastic,” he said.

“I would love to have somebody who comes in now and puts the pressure on the players.”
