Police probe as mountain of waste fly-tipped in street
‘DISGUSTED’ RESIDENTS SAY THEY HAVE SEEN RATS
NEIGHBOURS have been ‘disgusted’ after a massive pile of waste was dumped on a pavement outside a house.
People walking through the centre of Ashton-under-Lyne were left stunned by the huge mountain of waste outside a home in Swan Street.
From bed frames to sofas, shelving units to speakers and even multiple mattresses, there was a huge variety of rubbish left on the pavement – making it very difficult for pedestrians to walk past.
Tameside council has removed the rubbish from the street, but an image of the mess shared on social media sparked anger from residents.
One woman living nearby, who does not wish to be named, said: “It’s disgusting – people don’t seem to have any pride in where they live any more and are happy to just dump whatever out on the street.
“People have said they’ve seen rats running about around here and when you see things like that is it any wonder why? “It’s absolutely disgraceful – the council were there to clean it up quite quickly but why should they have to be responsible for someone else’s mess?”
Pictures of the heap showed some letters and pieces of paperwork mixed in. Items like this can be extremely useful to help local authorities track down those responsible for fly-tipping. A council spokesperson said: “We are aware of this, have removed the waste and are investigating further with the police.
“We have teams out every day clearing and investigating fly tipping and we will always take enforcement action where ever we can. Fly-tipping is illegal and disrespectful to the local community and environment.
“It can be hazardous, as well as being extremely expensive for us to clear on our limited resources.”
