Arrest after five people assaulted in rampage

A MAN has been arrested after FIVE people were targeted in a spate of attacks - including a pensioner.

A man in his 70s was rushed to hospital after he was reportedly hit over the head with a bottle, while a woman was left ‘shaken’ after being threatened near a motorway bridge.

Police were called to a ‘disturbanc­e’ yesterday afternoon, shortly before 2pm, on Oldham Street in Hyde, Tameside.

A cordon was put in place shortly after as officers conducted enquiries at the scene.

Witnesses saw tissues and a pillow ‘covered in blood’ on the pavement. A man in his 70s was rushed to hospital shortly after 2pm with serious head injuries and is now in a stable condition.

It was then reported that four other people were also targeted nearby.

This included a woman, who witnesses also described as ‘elderly,’ who is believed to have been threatened near a motorway bridge.

The remaining victims are not said to have been injured but are ‘understand­ably shaken,’ police said.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault; section 39 assault; and section 47 assault.

Detectives say they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incidents.

A spokespers­on for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called shortly before 2pm to a report of a disturbanc­e on Oldham Street, Hyde. A man is understood to have assaulted a man in his 70s with a bottle before making off from the scene.

“The victim was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatenin­g head injuries, and remains there in a stable condition.

“Four other people are then also believed to have been assaulted including a woman threatened near a motorway bridge - and weren’t seriously injured but were all left understand­ably shaken.

“A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault, section 39 assault and section 47 assault. Detectives aren’t looking for anyone further at this time. If anyone has any informatio­n, please contact police on 0161 856 9262 quoting incident 1530 of 30/11/2021.
